About This Site

Top Camping Gear Outdoor is written for families who camp on long weekends and bring a crowd. We cover the gear that makes or breaks a car camping trip: family tents, comfortable camp chairs, rolling coolers, two-burner propane stoves and rechargeable LED lanterns. Every piece is judged on how fast it sets up, how well it holds up season after season, and whether it keeps kids and older backs comfortable.

Campsite Safety

Never run a propane stove, lantern or heater inside a tent, camper shell or closed vehicle. Fuel-burning gear produces carbon monoxide, which has no smell and can kill sleeping campers. Cook outdoors, on a stable surface, away from tent walls, dry grass and overhanging branches, and keep children back from the stove while it is lit and while the grate cools.

Check propane cylinders and fittings for leaks before each trip, store cylinders upright and outside the tent, and never leave a lit stove unattended. Follow each manufacturer's instructions for setup, weight limits and fuel use.

Stake and guy out tents fully; wind can lift an unstaked tent with gear or children inside. Check camp chair weight ratings, and keep lantern batteries and charging cables dry. Pack perishable food at safe temperatures with enough ice, drink plenty of water, use sun protection, and know the campground's fire rules and the nearest emergency services before you arrive.
